Mott MacDonald, one of the
UK’s leading energy consultancies, and QualityTonnes, one of the top CDM
project developers, have announced that they will work together to develop
greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction projects around the world for sale in the
international carbon market.
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol allows
projects that reduce GHG emissions in developing countries – many of which
have GHG emission targets under the
Kyoto regime and European Trading System – to generate credits and be sold to
international buyers. Mott MacDonald
and QualityTonnes will work together to develop and certify CDM projects for
sale to such buyers.
The two companies will work
particularly in the developing world, to survey existing and potentially new
clients for GHG-reduction opportunities. Emphasis
will be placed on oil and gas companies, electric utilities, water companies,
selected industry sectors and renewable energy developers – all areas in which
QualityTonnes has already developed approved CDM methodologies.
Mott MacDonald will focus on developing the technical side of the
projects, while QualityTonnes will focus on the complex CDM certification
process.
Commenting on the agreement
Isabel Boira-Segarra
head of Mott MacDonald's Carbon Initiative
said:
"QualityTonnes was recently recognised by Carbon Finance
Magazine as ‘one of the world leaders in approved CDM methodologies’. By
combining this expertise with Mott MacDonald’s technical skills and experience,
we believe we
can make a significant
impact on the fight to reduce GHGs and global warming."
"Mott MacDonald’s global
reach, with offices and experts working on major developments all over the
world, will provide tremendous opportunities to identify CDM projects in the
energy, water, transport and other sectors," said QualityTonnes managing
partner Seth Baruch. "We look
forward to working with Mott MacDonald to develop projects that can create what
is becoming an increasingly valuable commodity in the
Kyoto era - Certified Emission Reductions."
