    Oil and Gas Sector
The opportunities for cost-effective GHG reductions in the oil and gas sector are tremendous. With QT's extensive background in the sector, we have helped develop a number of projects that reduce GHG emissions from both oil and gas infrastructure. Of particular interest is methane, which has 21 times the global warming potential as carbon dioxide. Although methane reduction projects are very common under the CDM, most tend to be in the area of landfill gas. The oil and gas sector remain, to a large extent, an untapped market.

To begin developing this market, QT drafted one of the few methodologies in the sector (AM0023). Throughout gas transmission lines, the network of compressor stations and gate stations is typically a large source of methane losses. Many gas pipeline operators lack the advanced sensing equipment or the skilled workers required to identify and repair leaks. QT's methodology for this project will use modern measuring techniques to identify leaks and prevent venting of natural gas during station maintenance. For this project, QT will use a high-volume sampler, which captures all of the emissions from a leaking component to accurately quantify leak emissions rates.
